Edward Arthur Vogelgesang passed away peacefully in his Calgary home on June 30, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on February 1, 1940, Ed was the youngest of ten children. He shared nearly 65 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Annette (née Robin), who predeceased him by six months.
Welcomed into his eternal rest by those who have gone before include his parents, five siblings, and his beloved wife. Ed leaves behind a family that grieves deeply for his passing. His children, Catherine Burdett (Danny), Rob (Catherine), Edward (Karren), and Joel (Cheryl), and his treasured grandchildren—Kyle, Shane, Nicole, Madeleine, Brielle, Alexis, Olivia, Jonah, Asher, Ali, and niece AJ—carry forward his legacy of love, humor, and kindness. Ed's extended family, including countless nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, also mourn his loss.
Ed was a man who touched the lives of everyone he met, leaving an indelible mark with his huge heart, care, and generosity. Whether you were a family member, friend, or colleague, he had a way of making you feel important. He was, without question, the hero of his family and a role model to all who knew him. By age 27, with a wife and four young children, Ed embarked on what would become a remarkable 40+ year career in the petroleum, petrochemical, and mining industries, working across Canada, the United States, and abroad. His professional journey took him on assignments around the world, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela, where he served as an Executive sponsor on major projects. His reputation as a well-respected leader in his industry was hard-earned, and his enterprising spirit extended beyond the boardroom.
He will be remembered as a man who lived life fully and gave of himself freely.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the medical staff at South Health Campus and to the caring team at Verve Aspen Woods for their compassionate support during his final two weeks.
A celebration of Ed's life will be on Thursday, October 17th at 1030am with refreshments to follow at Eden Brook Funeral Home and Cemetery in Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
